Environmental monitoring stations may measure air quality, particulate matter, gas concentration, noise, rainfall or other local conditions. A solar power system can support a remote station when the assessment includes each instrument, its duty cycle, the data-acquisition equipment and the communications path.
This article is a configuration guide rather than a claim that one standard solar kit suits all stations. The final design should be based on the instruments’ published requirements, their sampling and transmission schedule, the site’s solar conditions, temperature range and required service interval.
Build a complete energy inventory
Include analyzers, pumps or fans, sensor heaters, data loggers, cellular routers, displays and calibration accessories where they are part of normal operation. A device that only runs periodically may still produce a high peak load, so both energy per day and peak current need to be recorded.
Use the correct power path
Where compatible equipment uses DC, direct regulated DC distribution can improve system efficiency. If an inverter is required, account for its standby use and conversion losses. The controller, battery, distribution protection and output voltage should be selected for the equipment specification instead of being inferred from the panel rating.
Field conditions that affect reliability
- Panel shade from nearby buildings, trees or seasonal pollution deposits
- Enclosure temperature, ventilation and condensation risk
- Dust, corrosion and access for cleaning or calibration
- Lightning and surge exposure for long cable runs
- Battery reserve required before the next practical maintenance visit
Frequently asked questions
Can solar power run an air-quality monitoring station?
It may be appropriate for a defined station load. Pumps, heaters and communications equipment need to be included because they may use more energy than the sensing element itself.
How is the battery reserve selected?
Reserve is selected from the daily design energy, required autonomy, usable battery capacity at the expected temperature and the local low-sunlight period. See custom solar power systems for a project-specific assessment.
